What's the ideal amount of coffee to use per cup of water in a French ... I don't know if there's an ideal ratio since this is really about how strong

I agree, everybody has different tastes, so adjust your ratio accordingly. Not sure what you mean by a French.

I use three heaping scoops to 6 to 8 cups of water, the scoop is 1/8 of a cup. We save any leftover coffee to make Iced Coffee.

We finally caved and bought a single serve coffee maker. I wasn't sure that I'd like it, but having the option to NOT use expensive K-cups has made it more attractive. We still like the K-cups, but I drink too much coffee to make them practical on a full time basis.
